On my Aros native setup, mplayer has had distortion since the kernel change. For mp3 music, try using Harmony player or Zamp instead. I haven't noticed any distortion with the startup sound.

sabbate, I tried old and new OWB, and it works fine with normal html forms, but breaks when you try to use AJAX uploaders.

It's possible there's something wonky with the virtualbox networking, and I'll be trying it again once I have a dedicated AROS box set up

My plate is full just porting simple games. I am not technical enough to repair any problems SDL may have. I can accept some jerkiness over the flickering so I make the changes.

I can't answer your question. I think you are correct that SDL uses CGX, but am not certain. Anything you can do to make SDL smoother would of course be appreciated.

I only changed an existing line, from vesa=32bit, to vesa=1024x768x32

This is the same thing I enter manually on boot.

In fact, there is currently no working AROS driver for Intel gigabit NICs. IMHO it's a failing of the HCL that it includes hypothetical drivers such as e1000e.device.

To clarify:

Dont use 0.73 or o.73b. They both contain bugs vs 0.74 (including probs with physical cdroms).

I never uploaded 0.74 or newer to the archives though.

So far as I know Icaros and Broadway both use the 0.74 version I gave links to here at aros-exec. AspireOS however contains an svn version that I sent Nikolaos that's about 12 months more recent than 0.74.

I also have a version that contains 3dfx emulation that I so far havent sent to anyone (good fun playing half-life under AROS :)), but it's based around 0.72 as the diff couldnt work against anything newer and I was too lazy to "fix" it :)

I kindly disagree here. IMHO in the AROS Shell Manual it worths placing everything AROS nightlies put, at least, in the PATH. Or, in other words, everything users can run immediately after opening a shell window. I guess from user's POV command location shouldn't matter so much, and programs - in particular archivers from extras:aminet/C - should be part of the manual. Anyway, placing non-standard things is something chapters and sections have been created for.

Depends a little on what your wishes are.

If you want to see superfast 3d performance without any issues then it could become difficult to find the right hw. Better ask about it or look around what other people experience with the gfx card you have set your mind onto.
The hardware compatibility list in the wikibook does unfortunatley not tell you exact details about that.

If you are just seeking a relatively fast system to do some development/browsing/occasional 2d game then even vesa mode is fast enough to do all that without really noticing things.

Even in a virtual machine (that also only has vesa support) things go smooth enough.

It is tiresome to find a 100% AROS compatible machine out there, so please don't blame yourself too hard for that...

If you are new to AROS then please try AROS a little first.

You will then soon enough find out the bottlenecks that are bothering you and act accordingly to reduce those bottlenecks.
