question about a graphic card choice

Hi,

I plan to change my arosbox graphic card (agp), but I don't know what I should choose...

The cheaper the better, since it's an hobby computer. No more than 40euros. I also want to keep it quiet (passive cooling).

Used cards (on ebay for example) are expensive. I found some cheap new cards on french websites, like this one :

http://www.cdiscount.com/informatique ... 6704-g606200a8e49tsb.html

it's a geforce 6200 (350mhz) with 512mo ddr2 (533mhz).

Currently, I'm using a geforce FX5xxx with 128mo (cheap card with passive cooling too, embedded with a office PC).

So the question are :

is geforce 6200 compatible with Aros ?

Is it a good choice for overall performance (keeping the price in mind), video, 3d, and all ? I mean, does it will make Aros faster ?

Will I feel the diference of performance significantly, comparing my current card ?

Otherwise, what is your budget-minded choice advice for my future upgrade ?

thanks you a lot !

I'm actually using 6200 for most of my development. The question is which exact mode of GF 5 you have now. Since 6200 is a low end model it might be slower than a good GF 5.

Another question actually is what AGP chipset does your motherboard have. Only a limited range of chipsets are supported and if yours is not, you will not use full potential of the AGP. There are not such problems with PCI-E though.

My current graphic card is a low end noname one. In fact it was embedded with an office dedicated PC. I can't remember the exact number since it's not marked on the card.

Can I know the specific name of it using a software or whatever (same thing for the agp chipset) ?

thanks

ps : if pci express is simplier, perhaps I'll wait for a complete upgrade. IN that case, I should be able to place a small motherboard instead of the current one. Maybe it would be simplier and smarter to upgrade the whole thing, instead on changing parts on the current old motherboard.

If you have the possibility I would surelly encaurage to go for PCI-E - it will always surpase AGP solutions in terms of perfromance. My on-board 8300 PCIE is much better than standalone 6200 AGP.

OK, thank you. I believe it 's what I 'll do in the future. For now, I'll keep my old aros box for betatests.

By the way, a friend gave me for free a Celeron 2GHZ motherboard. Will it be better than my current pentium 4 1.8GHZ ?

The motherboards are the same size, so I 'll be able to switch them easily.

thanks

I don't know about 6100 and 7100 but 8300 and above (ION) seem to work.

Does it work with Vesa or nouveau(native driver)?

Using a nightly from May 6th or so, the onboard 6150se
works with nouveau showing nv: screen modes with native boot menu option, however there is a warning message
during boot which says something like
'unknown connector type 0xFF'
and not all potential modes come up, only the vesa-like modes including 1024x768 being the highest available choice.
The CRT monitor is capable of 1600x1200.
(computer is debranded HP m8000n, monitor is an old Viewsonic UltraBrite A90f+)

I don't think the AROS nforce ethernet driver works yet with
the onboard chip, and hda audio driver didn't detect which
output was connected and only defaults out the back
speaker connector.
