@fishy_fis: Yeah, I considered Eduke32 too, but it wouldn't be easy to maintain a port of it, and it doesn't support netplay. Duke3Dw is a good compromise. While it lacks the Polymer renderer, and many of the advanced Eduke32 stuff, it supports HRPs, has stable multiplayer, has a modern interface, etc.

@all: New build with sound support! I forgot to update the makefile of the audio subsystem... I've got balls of fail! Sadly no music support, since AROS doesn't have a MIDI synthesizer. I also fixed the bug which prevented the saved games from loading. Also the multiplayer mode should work now. There's no startup menu yet, but you can launch it from the command line. Link in the first port.

New version compiled with vorbis support, and hopefully fewer bugs. It also includes the Build editor, so you can make your own Duke3D levels on AROS. If you use a non-US keyboard layout it can be a little tricky to control the editor. You can redefine the keys in build.cfg.

BSzili: Very nice now :) Only complain I can think of is that sometimes when monster is attacking or something, I get this kind of hickup and after that back to normal. It is like a disk loading (cache) problem. I don't know.

Strange, I haven't noticed stuttering issues. Does it happen in both classic and OpenGL modes?

BSzili:

I've noticed a mp3 version of Duke 3D theme that can be doewnloaded from 3D realms website. Wouldn't be possible to use it instead of the original MIDI rendition?

@BSZili

maybe this can help a bit for MIDI?

http://aminet.net/package/dev/c/camd-morphos-dev
http://aminet.net/package/mus/edit/camd
http://aminet.net/package/mus/midi/camd
(found no midi player sources for AHI so far :( )

Else why not get volunteers to make soudtrack covers in xm format? ;)

saimon69: Unfortunately CAMD is only standardized API for accessing MIDI devices, it provides no software MIDI synth. We would need something like timidity.
There's no out-of-the-box support for tracker files, but a separate MP3 or OGA soundtrack would be feasible. The only problem is: it might not be legal to distribute them with the port. Except grabbag.mp3 Paolone mentioned, and maybe music from the 1st episode.

Doesn't our SDL_Mixer have timitidy built in?

Hmm, good question. I have no clue, because jaudiolib uses it's own mixing code. I'll have to investigate this :)

edit: Eduke32 has an SDL_mixer based music implementation, I think I can use that. I hope timidity really works. I'll throw together a small program to test midi playback. Stay tuned!
