hi all

I was talking with my friend in another forum told me that he felt this release and that he was quite happy, do you expect to make the jump?

Thanks

I don't fully understand your question, but there are no definite plans for such a transition. There are ideas, but nothing is set in stone AFAIK.

For us developers it would be easy to just forget ABIv0. We keep it because all distributions and almost all applications are for ABIv0.

Let's do a poll: Name up to 5 applications/games where you say "if they'd exist for ABIv1 I would switch".

If someone starts building a distribution using ABIv1 it would be the first step for a switch.

I would suggest these Applications to be ported first:

YAM
OWB
FinalWriter
Lodepaint/Lunapaint
Viewbox

But I would prefer AMD64 over x386

i386 ABI v1 makes no sense for me, too.

x86_64 is already on ABI v1, is there a v0 at all?

FinalWriter has a very good chance to work on v1, I guess .

Hi

First of all, for anyone who may care, there won't be any ABIv1 i386 based Icaros Desktop. I am sorry, but a similar switch would frankly mean re-doing the whole distro and I can't see - like O1i - any advantage in the effort, just to keep all i386 32bit limitations. Since AROS 64bit is ALREADY incompatible with 32 bit binaries, BUT it would at least give access to a greater amount of RAM (not counting the fact that SMP and other goodies might be 'added' more easily to this unexplored but less restrictive field), I would be more motivated into investing my free time into a 64 bit transition, more than a pointless ABI switch.

Neverthless, for me the question would be really different. I won't list here the application I 'would like' to be ported to 64bit v1, but the ones I NEED to make Icaros behave... well, like Icaros:

CRITICAL APPS ARE

Almost everything in the Light distribution, including:
Dopus 5 Magellan
OWB
MPlayer
Ghostscript
YAFS ftp server and SNUG http server
ZuneView
ZunePaint
ZuneARC
Janus-UAE with integration features
Amilua
ArosPDF
AmiStart
everything in /Development/bin
madahi (command)
VNC server and client
Rdesktop client
all archivers like 7zdec, bzip2 etc
ActivateWin (command)
ZUnzip
Dt2Thumb (command)
mkisofs (command)
wget
processicon (Command)
wbXcli (Command)

IMPORTANT

MUIbase
Timidity
LunaPaint
Protrekkr
A2ps
Stackmon
SCANdal
Gocr
NetworkSnoop
Txt2Pdf
flite
lame
everything else in C: not already mentioned

Obviously, a distribution with mandatory apps only would not be useful at all, so we also need (in no importance order)

- Almost everything in Extras:Development (please use Icaros Desktop Live's Extras: as a reference, not nightly builds')

- Trackers (MilkyTracker, Protrekkr and possibly others)

- ZuneFig and other design tools like GrafX2, ThemeEditor, POVray, POtrace

- Good text editors with syntax highlighting (Annotate, EdiSyn)

- Misc apps like SQLman, Mapparium, Antiword, SimpleEditor, uCommander, Wazp3D, WeatherBar

- Media editors like FFMPEG, PXDrum, BigBand and players like ArModPlugPlayer/MikModPlayer, Harmony Player etc

- image viewers like Comics, LoView, PicShow, LookHere

- Network clients like SimpleMail (or YAM), WookieChat, maybe, why not, a better IM program supporting modern protocols (skype, for instamce)

- Games and EMULATORS (VICE and others in particular)

I know, it's a very big list, and includes many tools which generally work "under the hood", but (at least for the first ones I listed) I can't really live without them. Or, at least, Icaros as you know it could not.

Let's not forget though that building for x86_64 means building for ABIv1, and as it is still a moving target -- unlike ABIv0, there is no warranty that something compiled today will still work with a system built tomorrow.

ActivateWin is built using the build system so it can be made available anywhere, it could even be made part of AROS if wanted, thus answering the problem of the moving target.
I will soon have a look at ProcessIcon, it should also be easy to port IMHO, but I don't think it could be made part of AROS -- it could probably be made part of Ports.
That's the two of your list I can speak about

If you are running AROS on a modern x86 system then using 32bit is quite pointless/limiting - but some people like to still run AROS on old hardware so there will always be a need for a 32bit version.

If you are going to the effort of compiling the stuff for 64bit anyhow, there is no big deal to also compile it for the 32bit target, the same as you will for Arm or other AROS architectures anyhow -!if you are doing it all manually then more the fool you.

It has been targeted at ABI v1 from the offset - that's why the demo doesn't work too great on ABI v0 (which I had nothing to do with)
