hi all

I was talking with my friend in another forum told me that he felt this release and that he was quite happy, do you expect to make the jump?

Thanks

It isn't clear still what remains to be addressed, though personally I would love to see ABI v0 get knocked on the head this year (perhaps nearer the year end)

I do feel though we have a few things needing fixed up/completed/reworked before we should push it as the "stable"/main AROS build - and by that I mean some internal API's like the gfx subsystem and kernel. They are already close to being quite solid but there are still a few things to do.

If you are running AROS on a modern x86 system then using 32bit is quite pointless/limiting - but some people like to still run AROS on old hardware so there will always be a need for a 32bit version.

Agreed. However they will run nightly builds or another distro than mine. :D

I have a single life only and, you can understand me, it needs quite a big motivation already to think about a version for a different platform

FinalWriter has a very good chance to work on v1, I guess .

It has been targeted at ABI v1 from the offset - that's why the demo doesn't work too great on ABI v0 (which I had nothing to do with)

Yeah, and I really hope to see it running fine on 64 bit ABIv1.

@kalamatee

I am comfortable with the current stable branch was a curiosity since the availability of the new abi and still understand the difficulties that must be overcome both for the system and applications.

@all

however the stable branch is quite comforting, I use it every day and not use another system, I do not have much to do with the computer but I happen to record audio, arrange the photos and use the browser.

thanks developers

Also a new version of Hollywood would be necessary for me to switch.

The applications I use on a pretty much daily basis:

- Janus
- OWB
- YAM
- APDF
- Ghostscript
- ZuneView
- Mplayer
- NoWinEd
- Editor
- Applications compiled using Hollywood

The applications I use on a weekly (or so) basis:

- Fryingpan
- MuiBase
- ZuneARC

The applications that aren't used that frequently but are damn useful when they are:

- MathX
- FinderV3
- QuickRecord
- QuickCDRipper
- LoView
- Lunapaint
- Mapparium
- AudioEvolution
- MarranoFTP
- Hollywood development system

Plus of course all the standard 'system' applications - DiskImage, Scout, etc.

I think if you're really going to make use of a system, it needs that critical mass of applications.

Cheers,
Nigel.

odyssey web-browser would be a nr.1 for me. I think with ONLY that ported to abi v.1 a switch would be ok for many. I could do aspireos update if that happen. Would also like megellan and mplayer.

there is much work to do, but as the saying still Kalamatee the new abi is not optimal so I think it will go ahead with the stable branch.

maybe maybe later you should open a bounty for a new distribution based on abiv1 i386 and who occupperà work should bring at least the basic software in order to successfully use

hi

IMHO an ABIv1 32bit distribution for i386 is completely pointless. We already have a quite nice software base running on ABIv0 which will be only partially available on ABIv1 once switch will be done. Having applications written for both ABIs for the same platform will just create confusion. I wonder how much "old computers" nowadays available wouldn't allow running the 64 bit flavour of AROS and what kind of use might be a old 486 or a Pentium be good at, when almost every web page now uses technologies which need a strong processor to work reliably.

We should favour, instead, using AROS on more modern technologies. This is what is called "making a platform advance". With a consistent ABIv1 distribution running on 64 bit systems, ported software, and a good emulation for older software, we may lead the transition of Amiga-like systems to the current century.

My personal dream is an ABIv1-64bit based Icaros Desktop running all current application (once ported to 64 bit) and a fresh new WinUAE-based Janus, running both classic and 4.x versions of AmigaOS (and AROS 68K as usual).
