Issues With USB Creation

I'm having a bad time trying to put Icaros 2.2 on a USB. I would love to do the entire Live! edition onto a USB, but when I try to boot even the light version on a USB after using Rufus on windows and DD in linux it doesn't want to boot. Am I missing something here?

After burning on a CD it boots fine (with display mode issues as usual) and this would be great if I had a DVD.

I usually boot a virtual machine with the iso, then install directly onto the USB stick from there and boot, that said, not all USB sticks like to boot with AROS on all computers though, especially old pentium 4/athlon xp era machines are not very good at usb booting and might cause issues.

Another source of the problem might be that the USB controller itself is poorly, or not at all, supported by AROS, which will also lead to a failed USB boot.

Here are my suggestions to find the problem:

1. Try the stick either in another machine, or a virtual one, if it boots there,
the stick itself should be fine.

2. Try another USB stick of another brand or model

3. Check BIOS settings for the USB, try setting USB 1.1 setting if available

4. Boot from DVD, then plug the stick into the machine and see if it pops up
the device

It might be that it simply is not possible to boot from USB with AROS on your particular machine

Did not know you had to install from a VM first. Interesting. Well I'll have to write that one down!

Hi. The whole procedure is written in icaros desktop's user manual. Find it in /storage or on website.

Installing via a VM is not required, it's just how I choose to do it, sometimes I found the iso creation tools can be problematic in making a bootable USB so I do it another way.

As paolo said, it is all in the Icaros desktop manuals,
try those steps first and if that fails, try the VM route.

Good luck

I had tried what was in the manual before and it hadn't worked :) I think I was doing something really wrong though and what was mentioned via VM.... I'm not sure what I have done differently or if something wasn't right with that ISO I used before but it is so far getting set up rather well.

I'm going to get the manual printed, hopefully :]

Edit: I want to shoehorn in here I have tried to use IRC and people weren't friendly with me. I'm glad the forum is a bit more mature so thank you for that :3

I have a new issue. I didn't know previously that SFS had a 124 gig max. The laptop I am trying to install to has a 1TB SSHD. I would try to set up the partitions myself but I don't see anything that would be a partition editor akin to GParted or the AmigaOS 4.1 Partitioning tool. Is there something akin to a partition editor? I can't seem to find anything in the manual either.

Hi. If you don't find HDToolBox comfortable enough, please google for Gparted and download it. Boot with that, and edit partitions as you like. Before changing Windows or Linux partition sizes, however, keep a backup of your most valulable data and follow the best practices for your operating system.

Once you've got 120 GB of unpartitioned space, you can create your paritions inside of it straight with InstallAROS, no need to use other partition managers for that.

Alright I thought that might be how it worked in the end. Thank you.

Just so I'm sure about this because theres something I'm not quite understanding from the manual, HDToolBox will only look for the empty space right? It won't just randomly blank out the first available set of sectors?

Edit: Found an answer, sorta. I have to have the drive even pop up which is actually a lot harder than I thought it would be :I
