photorec and testdisk are both from the same author.

photorec is good in recovering files (like image and picture files) while testdisk is good in recovering lost partitions.

What matters here can be described as follows:

The partition table on the disk doesn't really care what filesystem it contains. It's just placing borders around areas of your harddisk. How the partition is formatted depends on the filesystem you chose to install.

So there is nearly a 100% chance to recover the lost partition by doing the following steps:

1) doing a normal scan... it may find the lost partitions or
2) doing a deep scan... this most likely finds the lost partition

After the partition is found the information is written back to the disk and you can normally boot into the system again. Better would be to mount the system and recover all important data.

I ran into such an issue a couple of years back and luckely testdisk was able to recover the lost partitions instantly.

The options are
Intel
Efi gpt
Human
Mac
None
Sun
Xbox

So which one should I go for?
