Out of curiosity, why were you amazed ?

Because VESA mode relies (relied?) on information got from BIOS VBE extension, which basically means if your card didn't expressely tell AROS that yes, that mode was available, AROS wouldn't have used it. On AROS ABIv0 32 bit I usually got modes like 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024, in various palette depths. But nothing widescreen, for instance. On VMware and VBox I obviously force the VM to 'pass' those modes to AROS with ease.

Ah ok. thank you for the elaboration. I was already guessing you meant something like that, but just wanted to make sure.

I have tried the 18-04 build on a few machines.

Desktop AMD64 x2 6000
Boots to Workbench
Runs 1st SMP test (sml)
Crashes when running the 2nd one
USB is not owkring correctly

Laptop AMD64 x2 ???
Does not boot, tried some different GRUB options.
Stops at "Setting INTLine from INTA to INTA"

Laptop i7 6700
Boots to the workbench initialisation screen, Reports Trackdisk.task crash, clicking suspend nothing more happens.

Main PC
no CDROM and could not use system A to make a bootbale USB to test. will have to put some more effort into testing this laer.

The build of 18.4.17 gets further on my Celeron machine, but not to Wanderer. Booting in VESA, the last kernel message is about untialising EHCI etc., it then goes to a blank black sreen, there's a few more seconds of optical drive activity and then it hangs; no drive activity, blank screen.

Cheers,
Nigel.

I have old hp laptop which does the same, but for my surprise it does work if I connect external monitor. So if you machine is laptop, please try that. For some reason vesamode outputs to vga connector, not internal screen on that hp laptop.

The GCC 6.3.0 based x86_64 builds are now active so please test with those. Do not report issues with builds before 27.4 since it is pointless.

The normal pc-x86_64 build also has the native GCC 6.3.0 toolchain binaries, so they will also need some testing.

Thank you. That might be a huge difference regaring if it boots or not. Everyone that had problems booting should try again with this one.

edit: This is great. Now AROS 64 smp works both native. Booting from dvd and with vmware :)

I tried to install to USB drive but that did not quite work. I managed to wipe the drive but not install AROS to it.

Keep on the great work!

I tested the latest nightly for smp build.. and it boots fine on 4 of 5 PCs.. still doesn't like the Optiplex MT 780..crashes immediately in VESA Mode!

AHI Prefs now don't crash anymore but Soundblaster Live! is recognized as VOID and has no Sound.. network Prefs seem to work but I found no Software to test it.. AircOS would be cool to test if I can access the Internet!

Here a Foto of the crash of the Dell Optiplex MT 780 booted in native mode:
