3Com network adapter

Hi!

I am going to set-up an Asus L4500R notebook for using AROS.
Installed the nightly build ABIV0.
The PCITool said it has an IXP 200 3COM 3C920B Ethernet controller (0x4342).

For the interface the etherlink3.device is used.

Unfortunately there is no network connection, but please help me how can I check that the driver is working or not?

Pinging the localhost is working.

I am a nextgen Amiga guy, so not an expert in AROSTCP.

Hi Lazi,
There is no autoconfiguration for the network driver - the one that comes up by default in network prefs is not necessarily one that will work with your chipset. I'm afraid there is a good chance your network controller is not supported at all, but to check you could go throught setting each possible driver and then try pinging your router or another machine.

If your laptop has a mini-pci slot, you could try an Atheros based chipset one (have a look at the supported hardware on the AROS homepage). However, it seems rather hit and miss as to if a card is recognised by the bios of a machine and is therefore usable. I use a Realtek 8180 chipset based USB wireless dongle (Netgear WG111v3 to be precise) to network my laptop and netbook (neither of which have supported wired networking), and it works very reliably.

Cheers,
Nigel.

@lazi

You picked the right driver: etherlink3.device is the one to try for any 3Com NIC. However, the driver doesn't recognise that PCI ID (1002:4342). I'm trying to figure out which driver is used for this NIC under Linux so I can know if it makes sense to add the ID to a new version of the driver. Do you have a Linux Live CD you could try on it?

UPDATE: there may be something weird going on here: in lspci output I've seen, other NICs are mentioned alongside the 3Com one, and the 3Com one is identified as a bridge! Are there any other PCI devices identified as Ethernet adapters on you laptop?

You are right! There is another one:

Network Ethernet
Broadcom Limited
BCM4401 100Base-T

Vendor: 0x14e4
ProductID: 0x4401

I see that it is not supported at all.

Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately this cpu (Pentium M) does not support neither latest Ubuntu or Debian. (Missing PAE signal.)

Assuming your laptop only has one Ethernet port, it looks like the 3Com entry is an error in the PCI database! There's no need to try a Linux CD now, I think it would be a waste of time.

As well as the wireless options ntromans mentioned, there are wired USB NICs that are compatible with AROS.
