File sharing with Windows 7

I've managed to get file sharing on Windows 7. It's much more complicated compared to XP. I can transfer files but it takes really long times. Copying 18mb files to Windows takes about 20 minutes. What I'm doing wrong? How can i speed up file transfers?

A> look up changing registry settings to use an older SMB protocol on windows.

B> hope someone updates the smb client to support newer protocols.

Hi IIRC SMBv1 has been completely deprecated on Windows after update MS17-010, since it's vulnerable to wannacry and petya ransomwares. These days, enabling/using SMBv1 on Windows is a bad idea so yes, let's hope someone will update AROS SMB implementation.

BTW: best method to transfer files is using FTP. If you're using Icaros as I think, just enable it in Icaros preferences and use it as described in the manual.

Yes SMB v1 was turned off by default in the March security update for Windows systems. WannaCrypt and Petya both exploit SMBv1 so it should remain turned off.

FWIW SMB file transfer with a *nix host (Free BSD 10) is also about the same speed. I don't know which version it's using..

I don't know how WannaCrypt and Petya works.. can I use SMBv1 safely if I use a router to connect to internet?

How can I configure ftp to not use MyWorkspace? I never used it and the files I want to copy are on different partitions. Copying files to MyWorkspace then on Windows, then deleting it from MyWorkspace is a boring task. How can I copy files from AROS to Windows and not vice versa?

What about zipping all the files you need to move, then you can FTP them all in the archive in one go?

Cheers,
Nigel.

Because the files I need to copy are mostly archives or files about 1 gb. Sometimes are smaller than this. I usually copy what I need to an usb key, but now for some reason I don't know I can't use the same usb key because IcAROS 2.2 can't read them. On 2.1 I had no problem at all with those keys and If I boot IcAROS 2.1 the keys are fully working. For now I can use only a 2 gb usb key.

I would say no, as there is always a risk, especially now that the exploit is in the wild and Petya apparently employed more than just the one used by Wannacrypt. I guess it depends of whether you're happy to take that risk.

Best not to take my advice anyway, my wife's laptop still runs XP :).

So, what about unplugging the fibre optic or ethenet cable from the router so you're isolated fron the internet, enable SMP1 on Windows, transfer the files and then disable SMP1 before reconnecting to the internet?

Cheers,
Nigel.
