Amiga: Thank you. That is correct. I have to use hard compression to fit into the archives and only latest RAR version supports that.

Affableaardvark: Glad to hear that :)

I've just tried downloading the archive (twice to ensure it wasn't a download error) but when I try to unpack it using unrar it's reporting it "is not a RAR archive".

You have an old version of WinRAR, you need to install version 5 or later.

I'm not using Windows - this is unrar on AROS.

Cheers,
Nigel.

Nigel: Let's hope some could compile a more recent version for AROS then. Should not be that hard. Maybe I give it a try but I'm not realy the right person to do it.

Hi nikolaos,
can you tell me more about aspire os. I hear about it since a lot of time, and it seems really interesting.
Is it an AROS port/distribution ? is it based on aros nightly ?
and all other info you may want to give.
cheers

oan3: AspireOS is realy a night build with my configurations, layout + added programs inkluding Odyssey web-browser that are not in the night builds. As for most people that want to try out AROS the night builds are lacking in many ways.
The night builds are not realy ment for users anyway. It is better that the distribution holders keep track on the night builds and make sure new bugs etc. are not introduced as new code and changes happen.

If you try AspireOS I think you will notice that it feels much like the legacy AmigaOS in the way it open windows etc. I want Amiga people to feel at home once they try it.
I'm using BoingIconBar as the default program launcher. In that scense it is a little like MacOS, but as I don't like MacOS I think that is the only part where it could compare.
I will in no way talk anything nagative about other AROS distributions but I wanted something more simple only with programs I feel are working real good with AROS.
I also wanted something quite small in archive size and a good way to try out AROS for everyone interested.

There will be some nice videos in the future about how to use it, how to get online and more.

My dream would be some fully supported laptop where AspireOS came as default OS.
We have ACER aspire one 110, 150 and more but I mean something ready people could buy and use. Something that could found further development into the future of AROS.
Maybe even hire 2 or 3 people working fulltime for AROS.
If anyone would be interested in doing something like don't hesitate to make contact.

So, Installing - it's just creating a USB stick as usual and boot from there, I suppose?
I hope to get some free time from the gigantic Oracle stack this weekend and try it out on the Acer santa brought to me.

Yep, but I could only find instructions for CD/DVD - haven't used one of those for many years ;)
I'll figure it out

This is from installation page AspireOS.com

Install AspireOS without optical drive.

Qemu guide from Olivier:

It is possible to install AROS v0 i386 on an USB stick from Qemu.
start Qemu with: sudo qemu -cdrom aros-pc-i386.iso -usb -usbdevice host:vendorid:productid -boot d
with vendorid:productid for your insterted USB stick, given by lsusb.
then open tools/hdtoolbox (clicking on it)
from there, prepare a MBR(RDB(DU0)) or RDB(DU0) partition, set as SFS BE. don't forget to set it as bootable. save all. restart the virtual machine (restarting the OS doesn't work)
once on the Wanderer again, install AROS. that's it.
