Tell me AROS doesn't come standard with a workbench with white icon text, requiring a dark background, and black file list text, requiring a light background!

Again this is a preferences thing. Go to your preferences and configure text font, color etc.

Yes, I know, and once I recall where I might find this, I will change it to make the system useable.

However, the important part is the "come standard".

Why pick standard settings that will have to be changed immediately?

Mysha: This is night build I guess?

For Icaros or AspireOS distributions it is a matter of taste.
It might be a good idea though as you say to have it as universal as possible.
I don't understand exactly how you want it.
Do you want the text to be white with the border around it in black?

Standard Amiga WB 2.1 and 3.1 is black text.

This is the last nightly I fetched (probably a few months) and it's the last Icaros so far (also not very recent as I understand it).

I have no particular preference, but I find that for me a narrow outline to try to get around the problem doesn't work very well. It's the solid colour of the letters that matters. I would have that colour the same for both cases. A contrasting outline would then help seeing stuff on a picture background.

Mysha: You want the text in a colour?

If that is the case I'm personaly not a big fan of that as it will not match most other colours being background, icons or other visuals on screen.

Windows use white icon text with black shadow. Ubuntu use white.

If it is something I'm missing come up with a screenshot as example.

"Colour" as in: White, black, grey, blue, red, green, etc.. Best contrast would be one of black on white or near white, or white on black or near black. We already know that black on a light grey works (OS 3), as does white on blue (OS 1).

Me being the proud owner of an Amiga 1000, I prefer white letters, but further developments suggest that black letters look snazzier. And it is, after all, about making it look attractive as well as useable.
