compile programs to abi v.1

I'm thinking I could take some abi v.0 source code and compile to abi v.1 i386
I can use Ubuntu. The question is what I need to do?
Does it matter if it is Ubuntu 64-bit or does it have to be 32-bit.
Beginners guide if you like :)

Sabbate: Sure is possible but dangerous. We don't have memory protection and SFS will easy get corrupt.
Compile from AROS hosted is at least better. Faster to get back after crash and no SFS.
To run AROS hosted abi v.1 i386 I would need Linux i386 right?

64-bit Linux is fine (see the instructions on AROS.org for packages needed. However, ABIv1 *will* change. We have been discussing how to get it finished this year (really this time), but for now it's still too early to start recompiling programs, unless it's strictly as an experiment.

Thank you for the info Neil.
It is just for me. I like to experiment a little with compiling and have a setup for it. Does not matter much if I need to recompile when abi v.1 is stable. I will not upload anything or include in AspireOS before you say abi v.1 is ready.

I will start to look into this and lets see how far I get. There will for sure be questions but maybe can be usefull for others too.

Neil: Ok, thx done that. I understand that from there I can compile AROS.
If I like to compile something from archives that include the program and source code for abi v.1 i386 like MAME.
http://archives.aros-exec.org/index.p ... &cat=emulation/gamesystem

How do I go forward with that?

@Nikos

I probably don't have time to look at individual source packages, but I'd say most such third-party sources are meant to be built inside AROS with a Makefile. Generally, you go to the source directory and type "make". For some packages originating from Linux or similar, you may need to enter the Unix-like shell with "sh", then run "./configure" folowed by "make". Also pay attention to README and INSTALL files etc.
