I had some questions about this :
- how much of thread.library can be re-used for pthread.library?
- Wouldn't it be possible to create pthread.library as a wrapper around thread.library, may be expanding thread.library to cover missing parts?

I know nothing about pthreads and what's possible, but wasn't vidarh working on pthreads for AROS recently? Perhaps it would be good to contact him to find out where he got to.

I think HenryCase is right. Vidarh has a github here: https://github.com/vidarh

Now I remembered, that the last time I heard some detailed infos from pthreads for aros was here:
http://eatenbyagrue.org/putting_things_in_context.html

I hope it helps. Here is also a svn on this server: http://toybox.cataclysm.cx/svn/AROS/l ... elopment/pthread/include/

Hi guys,

I've been pretty absent lately due to way too many commitments... If by "working on it" you mean that I looked at what's currently in AROS and tried to make at least the changes needed to compile git, then you're right. Unfortunately I didn't get much further than that before I was totally snowed under with other stuff.

I *did* look into the alternatives - looking to see if there were any reasonably portable pthreads implementations etc (remembering that Linux started out with userspace emulated threads, for example, and Windows also has challenges in terms of supporting pthreads). I didn't find any great alternative.

What little is in the AROS source tree looks like it might be the best bet for a starting point.

There are also some open source projects that have (very) partial pthreads emulation for Windows, including Git, that can give a reasonable idea of how to approach an implementation at least of the basics for AROS (as much as I hate to admit it, the Windows implementations seems to be a better match for the AmigaOS/AROS API than the Linux or BSD ones)

EDIT: Also, I'm trying to clear my schedule to start being able to spend some time on fun stuff again (AROS in particular), but in the meantime, while I don't have much time to code at the moment I'd be happy to answer questions to the best of my abilities about this if someone else wants to take a stab - easiest way to get hold of me is vidar@hokstad.com; I'm no advanced pthreads guru, though.

I did a quick port of pth (which apparently has a pthreads API in addition to its own) a couple of years ago. I think it was based on Geekgadgets sources. I can't remember much about it now, such as whether it worked properly or not. I might dig it out when I have time.

I looked again at the pth-1.4.1 code I was working on. It compiles, but I don't think it will work because of unimplemented clib signal functions such as sigstack().
