mmm... I've noticed a strange thing: AROS itself doesn't seem to support 32-bit screens (at least, the modes listed in the Screenmode preferences don't go beyond 24-bit), but, when asked to open 32-bit screens/windows SDL does return the requested resource (this surprised me a bit, indeed). I guess the problems you experienced may have something to do with this (well, also because BOH includes no AROS-specific code). What graphics card are you using? Can you try using generic VGA drivers (which work perfectly under VMware here)?
I'm new to AROS, so I can't really say what's going on. Can anybody enlighten me/us, please?

Hi Simone,

Glad to see you jumping on the Aros ship too!
Regarding the bit depth, SDL will give you a shadow (emulated) surface when you request an unsupported bit depth, which is probably the case on Aros when you request 32bit. For Chaotic Vortex, I'm using a 24bit surface, performance is much better.
Keep up the great work!

Boh colors are fine on my native Icaros 1.1.5 using Vesa. But like many SDL games, frame rate not as smooth as the windoze version. Music stutters, but not as bad as some SDL games. I guess we could turn the music off by default. Really like the themes and the documentation. Will be interesting to see what the artists in this community come up with.

The sound was not perfect, but ok.
The sound problem is common in most AROS SDL ports.
I hope it can be fixed soon, cause it's important that it's working correct.

Uhm... personally I don't find feel like releasing the game if it's got this sort of problems. Maybe I should wait for better libraries to become available.

To be honest, I don't think correcting this sound problem is on anyones todo list right now - I would say release the game now as this is AROS not BOH problem.

An AROS port has always been in the plans, but for technical reasons (make missing system environment variables support, dead DVD drives, HD problems) and time reasons it has been delayed until now.

Thanks for the explanation.
So, does this mean that SDL, when flushing to video memory, automatically performs the 32-bit -> 24-bit conversion?

In BOH's case, due to the entirely CPU hand-made rendering and the zooming, 24-bit would kill the performance.

Thanks. And best luck with Chaotic Vortex!

Nice to know
So, let me ask: what about using specific drivers? Is your card supported or are you forced to use the VESA ones?

Well, if you can only use VESA drivers, that could be one factor.
As for BOH, SDL affects performance only partially as 99% of the rendering code is custom - basically, most of SDL's impact is limited to the flushing of the raster data to video memory. The opposite happens with respect to audio: mixing is done entirely by SDL_mixer.

Music stutters, but not as bad as some SDL games.

Later I'll make another build with a 50% bigger audio buffer: this should reduce/fix stuttering without causing the sound effects to lag behind too much (anyway, I guess that stuttering is worse than lagging).

Well, yes, BOH allows to do that, but I can't honestly think of it as an optimal solution

Thanks

That's what I say, too!

Ah, OK. Thanks for letting me know
But I'm concerned also about the graphical problems reported by Yannickescu: maybe it's better not to rush the release too much and let the demo be tested a bit longer
Anyway, since I've also improved a few things, the AROS version will be part of update6, which means it will take a while before I prepare all the update packages - I guess they'll be out in a week or (more likely) two.

Demo updated. Please check whether the music still stutters and also report your impressions about the timing of menu navigation sound effects.
Thank you

Just like before or a little less?

In-game sound uses different settings, so it isn't affected by the latest changes.

Thanks, but what about their timining? Is it OK or does it seem delayed?
