Once the ARM port of AROS is done, we could, theoretically, start working on a smartphone/tablet-specific version of AROS.

It's a big project which would require significant additions(like, for example, touchscreen support, JAVA...) and changes to base AROS code and design, so obviously, we would need a fair number of experienced Amiga(and other) developers and manhours(more like manyears ) to complete it.

But I think it is a task worthy of undertaking. Considering that everyone are going mobile and that the market for desktop computers will continue shrinking, I think AMIGA should follow. And seeing that neither Hyperion or MorphOS team have any intentions of entering any new markets, not even laptops(I'm not counting used Apple ones), it leaves AROS as the only AMIGA OS with a real chance of being ported to mobile devices like tablets or smartphones in the near future. It also makes AROS the Amiga OS with the best chances of broadening it's user base by a noticeable margin.

Besides asking whether there are more AROS/AMIGA users/fans that think like me, I'd also like to ask you... do you think, can it be done?

P.S. I'd also like to ask the gentleman(or anyone else who knows) being tasked with the ARM port, which I believe is Mr Schultz, what's the status on the port and why the port was started in the first place? Just for the Efika MX netbook project, out of fun, curiosity, or was there some thought given for a further development into an OS capable of running on a tablet or smartphone devices in the future.

AROS could support such devices if enough information is available to write drivers. A tablet should be doable. AROS partly works with my fujitsu tabletPC with poseidon automagically working with the screen/pen. AROS doesn't yet know the idea of flipping the screen(s) into portrait mode.

I tried it on my Motion Tablet recently and it booted from the stick just fine. The Wacom pen didn't work at all so I didn't push it any further than that. It would be awesome though. It would need all the pen tools (pressure, angle, etc.). Then we could do crazy stuff in Lumapaint.

Tablett, Smartphone and other mobile devices ? Sorry they don't depend on the CPU, you could get x68 hardware with WinXP support for years.
What you need is a modified GUI ( imagine only one_mouse_key, no difference betwen mouse_over and click_on, an larger icons, gadgets and requester ) and of couse a lot of applications making it worth to be used as an operation system.

The new GUI might be able with 2-3 people working 3 month but the new applications for an tablett PC would still be missing not only because AROS still miss WiFi and Bluetooth.

Your Media Center could be a perfect application for a tablet, phone, STB or TV-computer. But that's just what I said, application not OSes are needed for a tablett PC. I think we will never see standard Microsoft Office on a consumer tablet PC, not on a iPad or iPhone even if they are based on OSX where this application is available.

What is needed fo a tablet PC is not only a media center, you will need media houses supporting the plattform with content. Apple has worked for years to get this.

Apple payed a lot, Apple does no work. Just patenting things other did before ; ) For years i disliked Microsoft but apple is now a more Evil company this days. DRM here, bad products hyped there.

OT END
Yeah you are right. We will provide a UI, AMC, ami-market and other companies can do what they want on top of it. We have some nice ideas which could bring AROS further (at least mentioned in the upper class)

Why not... there are a number of people already running Open Office 3 on their Nokia n900 smartphones. The port is still in progress so it isn't the fastest application, but it's getting there. The n900 has the TV-out feature so you can connect it to a big screen TV and at least, read and review documents very comfortably. And you could probably use bluetooth or wireless keyboard if you want to write as you would do on a PC.

There's even a youtube video of a guy playing Another World on a LCD big screen, running on n900 under Amiga emulator and a PS3 SIXAXIS controller.

In the future, smartphones and mobile devices in general will only be getting more powerful.

Why not...

because 2nd mouse and GUI messages of touchscreen systems doesn't really fit to applications that where designed for standard PCs with keyboard and mouse.

It's possible but it is a pain in the back, I know it because I played around with standard WinXP on a tablet PC some years ago. You could buy standard Tablet PCs with Windows Systems for years but no one wanted them.

There are probably going to be a lot of Atom based tablets coming out before Christmas. This would seem a more immediate possibility than having to rely on an unfinished ARM port of AROS.
