Here is the first public version of BnP for AROS with it's source code, despite all the modifications i made it's still mostly unusable due to several issues (see bugs.txt).

My first goal would be to make it work flawlessly in AROS as it is, then add all the original tools & accessories and finally improve the UI and add support for VSTs.

I don't have much spare time to dedicate on this so if anyone else is interested to collaborate i may open a googlecode page for the whole project (notice that this isn't as simple as SDL ports & co., it's much more tricky and would probably require the modification/enhancement of the OS itself).

Nice!

I'm wondering how you are planning to support VST's though. I assume you mean VSTi, since those are instruments. VSTi's that come compiled are for Windows and OSX. Are you planning to run VSTi's on a Windows host (when AROS runs hosted) and somehow make a bridge between the two? Or do you want to implement the VSTi interface and hope that some are open source and don't use any Windows/OSX native code?

(this apart from the Steinberg license violations probably!)

I mean instruments & effects. I guess i'll have to adapt steinberg SDK.

edit: if there's any problem i'll see what's used on Linux (like VeSTige or other plugins types).

Vestige is the reverse-engineered VST header files. You still won't be able to run Windows VST's without having Wine.

If you want I can send you sources from old BnP AROS port. It's from
2005 so I don't know how much changed since then. It shouldn't have
most problems you mentioned in bugs.txt. Including the refresh speed
problem: it uses an imageclass to basically cache old style image (data) in real bitmap and then render using the bitmap to avoid slow
drawing of old style Intuition Images (blitting planar bitmap data is
real slow especially on AROS hosted).

I wasn't aware of any other previous AROS port is there some site about it ? All i've seen are references to morphos & OS4 ports, the source could help eventually.

As i mentioned before it'll be better to make it run properly as it is and then bring it up to date.
All the original bitmaps will have to go away anyway.

Will the final version support midi controllers and/or utilize the capabilities of current generation Roland sound modules ?

Would be great to have a nice, future proof DAW based on Bars 'n' Pipes.
