Bounty Proposal:

Wanderer Lite: A slimmed down, ROMmable Wanderer, that is a drop-in replacement for Workbench 3.0

Purpose:

The intent is to provide a basic in-ROM Workbench
for AmigaOS applications running on AROS-m68k.

The current Wanderer uses MUI, which requires almost
1M of support libraries. This is very excessive for
'baseline' Amiga models (ie the 600 and 1200), and
prohibits the use of AROS m68k on those machines.

A small, lightweight version of Wanderer would make
AROS for baseline Amiga models viable.

Requirements:

* Must only use KickStart 3.0 libraries that are
available on the KickStart 3.0 ROM and Workbench
floppy, ie gadtools, intuition, icon, dos, etc.

* Must be a replacement Workbench -
patching the in-rom workbench.library is not allowed.

* Must be ROMmable - no global variables! Global
constants are fine, however.

* Should be as small as possible.

* Should have basic AmigaOS Workbench functionality.

Additional requirements for bounty completion:

* Provide complete source code, under the AROS
license, to the AROS team.

* Provide an ADF floppy image that demonstrates
Wanderer Lite, than can run under KickStart 3.0 or 3.1,
to the AROS team.

@phoenixkonsole: I believe that AROS Floppy serves for booting AROS CD media..

@Ezrec: The wanderer lite - you're going to take on that task yourself?

Isn't it possible to boot/roming DOpus instead?

I don't think it should be too difficult to write a simple workbench replacment program, but I'd be more interested in actually supporting the bounty if it included updating and fixing AROS's icon.library and workbench library as well.

icon.library needs to properly display old 3.x icon types such as glowicons, newicons, etc. found in the aminet collections, and allow future development options for resizable and stretchable bitmaps or structured drawings and animations of those to be implemented probably as a separate bounty or two, also making those formats available to intuition for its image needs.

workbench.library needs to have AppIcon, AppWindow, AppMenu, drag and drop, support done which hasn't been completely implemented yet.

What do you need a Workbench for, when you are not using a (floppy/hard)disk?
If you are using a disk - start WB from disk

are there any left??

What has this got to do with AROS??

Why not? You want to change the ROM without changing the ROM??

In AmigaOS 1.x-3.0, All 'C:LoadWB' did was start the
in-ROM workbench. If we want AROS m68k to be able to
support classic AmigaOS Workbench disks, then we need
to have an in-ROM workbench.

I have an Amiga 1000 with a 2M memory expansion, and
a 2M Amiga 1200 on my desk right here.

It makes sure that the person who fulfills the bounty
sticks with the libraries that are planned for even
the most minimal AROS m68k ROM image.

Wanderer does not alter workbench.library, and neither should Wanderer Lite (for this bounty). In future,
Wanderer Lite *may* be integrated into workbench.library,
but this is not required at this time.

Yes, that's perfectly possible, but it does not recreate the look & feel of Workbench, which is the goal of this bounty.

Good to know. Of course, this is another good reason it is important that Wanderer Lite be tested against KS 3.0/3.1 - so that its easier to find the AROS regressions in workbench.library, and fix them, by having a 'known good', independently developed workbench to test against.

Wanderer has been useful, but it (by design) does not expose the workbench.library bugs you refer to.

If noone else takes on the task, I will eventually get around to it. But having someone else (who actually has programmed Amiga GUI code before!) get this done before I actually need it would be worth paying for.

I have $50 USD reserved for this bounty, and hope to be one of the first to contribute to it if approved.
