as it seems aros has no installer utility, at least i dont see any in c: on aros68k.

i therefore downloaded this one from geit:
http://aminet.net/util/sys/Installer.lha (release 2011)
and see that it is basically working on my aros68k test setup here. there are some problems and im going to test it in depth but basically i wanted to know (ive asked it before) if this issue is going to be solved otherwise? if not maybe guido could be asked to contribute it to aros?

further ive found something that seems to be an aros installer replacement port to morphos. i cant test what it is having no mos machine.

http://aminet.net/util/misc/Installer.lha

is there any other alternative? we need a backwards compatible installation utility on aros68k, and we need it soon. likely on other aros platforms too?

uups, have found installer in utilities. it isnt exactly right place for it, as amiga software expects installer in c: also it doesnt actually seem to work, except it can be invoked..

im not sure. its a huge tool and shareware. somehow i had no patience with it. have you tested it successfully? as for guidos i must check why these scripts do not fully work, have an impression 68k version isnt exactly tested.

When I asked Jens Langner for the source code of
http://ing.light-speed.de/
some months ago he told me that it's to messy for a release

@mazze: i was not talking about anything called installerng or the like, but about the installer geit (guido merrsman) http://www.geit.de/eng_index.html
released last year to aminet:
http://aminet.net/package/util/sys/Installer
there is no source supplied but perhaps he will be willing to contribute, especially that it would mean thet the package is going to be actually used and debugged against the original.

edit: ive just succesfully installed scalos atop my aros 68k using this tool.

Problem is that Geit wants to use VBCC. Our headers aren't compatible with that compiler yet. Maybe you can convince hime to release his application(s) under an open source license.

Then it's a good tool

Sorry to "reopen" this old thread, but I contacted Andreas Falkenhahn, the author of Hollywood and NewInstaller. I asked him if he could think about releasing the Sourcecode for NewInstaller under an "AROS-compatible" open source licence.

He answered that NewInstaller is not a replacement for c/installer, but only an addon. It just generates scripts for c/installer and can not be used without the original installer.

I think it would be best to contact Jens Langner or Geit once again to have at least a starting point for an AROS-Installer. What do you think?

Ok, 5-6 years later I also did some digging and for some reason I decided that it was a good idea to reimplement this myself (at the time I did not realize how much work this was going to be).

I've come pretty far. It's mostly complete and the test coverage on the non Amiga parts is quite good.

The problem is that all testing until now has been done based on my interpretation of the 'Installer.guide' 1.19. As many of you probably know, this document isn't always crystal clear so I need some real world testing before I can feel confident that what I've done really is an Installer replacement and not something else :)

I would appreciate some advice before I continue with the manual testing:

- What installer scripts out there are the most complicated ones?

- What installer scripts out there are the most important ones?

If anyone would like to give this a go or look into the sources you'll find them here:
