Nvidia's 9800GT vs the 9800GTX.

Since I've been busy wheeling and dealing to raise money to build up my AROS dream machine, I've decided to do an experiment. I recently won a 512Mb 9800Gt for $34 shipped. I really wanted a GTX, but I've only so much money I am willing to spend on each item (I demand a deal generally)so I figured if worse comes to worse, the GT can not be that much far behind the GTX, can it?
Well to see for my self, I am trying to nab a GTX at or around the same price range. Max $40 shipped.

What I intend to do is load up Super Model, Jedi Academy/Outcast, RTCW, Dark Places, FPSE, and so on, and give both cards a good run for their money and see how each compares.

So if I luck out and get this card at the price range I want, are there any particular tests any of you can think of that might be useful to perform in order to see the real strengths of the GTX over the GT, or if in the end it really matters at all with the selection we got?

On that note, was the DOOM III port ever completed? Was a Quake IV port ever started/intended/possible?

EDIT: Aghh, found DOOM III. :)

EDIT 2: And here is an article comparing the GT to the GTX, though it is not directly AROS related, but still:

Quake 4 is not open source. The gameplay logic has been released under a restrictive license for the modders, but thats about it.
The Doom 3 port was never completed. If Kalamatee wants to throw the modified sources at me, I can give Dhewm3 another shot.

On that note... I won both cards in the end, both for $34 shipped. What luck. :)

If memory serves me correctly the gtx was essentially a die shrink of the esrlier g9x tech (as used in the gt). This allowed for a reasonable clock increase and speed scaled fairly linearly to increased clocks. It was pretty much a last ditch effort to squeeze as much as possible from that gpu.

Edit: ah, actually I think it was the gtx+ that was the die shrink/clock increased version

I got the 9800Gt today, though it is defective and showing graphical corruption at boot time. I swear, I have been getting my fair share of "tested" yet defective items off of Ebay lately. Within the past year I have purchased 8 XBOX controllers, and of them all only 2 were good if that tells you anything.

ANyhow, the test is off, I'll just end up with a 9800GTX+ (assuming it works when it arrives) with nothing to compare it to.

And now that I can add to this post... :)

I got the 9800GTX+ in the mail and thankfully it did in fact work!
So far it has been a vast improvement over my old card. I can turn up the settings on all the games I've tested thus far, plus I am seeing a lot less graphical glitches over all. It seems that the drivers we have were written with the 9800GTX+ in mind, then they just kind of crossed their fingers in regards to the other cards. So with that in mind, I highly suggest just picking up a 9800GTX+ from the get go and skipping everything else.

In regards to emulation and what have you, I am not noticing any speed improvements with MAME or Super Model. Everything still runs just like it was before, with the exception of Super Model where again there are less graphical glitches.

I think MAME is as good as the source will make it. Tekken 3 runs at 60FPS the same as it did with my old video card and much slower CPU. CHD games do not seem supported by our port of MAME so I can not test those.

DosBOX can be run in full screen as long as the surface is set to OpenGL, then it can switch between any resolution (within game) and not lock up the system. Next step is to get Fish's fork and see how well I can get 98Lite and some GL games running in it.

Over all, I'm a pretty happy camper, and happier still because this card only cost me $34 shipped! :)

It's a pretty good buy considering this is the fastest card you can get for AROS, until they patch up the power management in nouveau: http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/PowerManagement
It's somewhat under utilized, but who knows what software might arrive to AROS :3

WOW, if I'm reading that page right, we're still lacking quite a bit.

...not counting that whatever goal the nouveau team meets, then it must be ported to AROS too. And, frankly speaking, we can't always ask Deadwood to do everything for us.
