The truth about the "ports"

Hi,

some of you have likely read about the "ports" here and there and wondered what the f*ck that is.

Some years ago I found the ports of the BSD operating system.
https://www.freebsd.org/ports/index.html
They have thousands of applications which they build from external sources.

Here for example GrafX2:
https://svnweb.freebsd.org/ports/projects/flavors/graphics/grafx2/
Except of some administrative files there is only a Makefile and patch files.

I wanted to implement something similar for AROS. Luckily the build system had already templates for fetching external sources, patching and building them.
Here's the result
https://trac.aros.org/trac/browser/AROS/trunk/ports
(There are a lot of empty directories, though)
I had to disable some applications from being built, e.g. scummvm because I got linker errors.

The ports aren't part of the nightly builds because some are quite large and it doesn't make sense to rebuild them every night.

Instead the ports will be updated from time to time on the ABIv1 snapshot page:
http://aros.sourceforge.net/snapshots1.php

For ABIv0, Deadwood includes the ports in his ABIv0-on-trunk releases.

I'm trying to avoid to add applications which have been ported by others. DosBOX was an accident. I didn't know that the current version is in the Icaros distribution.

BTW: it isn't intended that the ports are a one-man-show.

Hi,
a new release of the ports for i386-ABIv1 and m86k is available at
http://aros.sourceforge.net/snapshots1.php

Changes since last release:

  • Vim added
  • Lunapaint added (only i386)
  • Fixed a segfault in GrafX2
  • VisualBoyAdvanced-M added (only i386, has a timing issue)
  • ZuneARC added

There's a new release of the ports on the download page.
http://aros.sourceforge.net/snapshots1.php

Only for ABIv1 systems!

olaf, if you want to use the sdl programs on 68k you need to disable ahi sound. there is some bug in sdl.library threads implementation which apparently causes a race condition, which effectively leads to program crash with division by 0.

i think i ve found the place, but i dont know how to fix it. i have only reported it to dev ml so far.

This issue might also be responsible for a stability problem with SDL audio on some x86 systems.

Good hunting, wawa
