I don't know how Paolone feel about this for Icaros but I would very much like to see some kind of a packet manager for AspireOS.

That way I could get the file size down on the system and almost not include any software at all. Sure Odyssey web-browser and DOpus and other important programs would be present but no games etc.

I would still like to controll what would be possible to download. Lot's of software for AROS are not working well and I would not like to include that. It would then be up to the user to download that from the archives or wherever they like.

I would very much like to see this in Zune GUI. First person that come to mind is Yannick cause he is so experienced with Zune and did many native programs.

Is this something other users might be interested in?
I'm thinking we could collect some money to get this done.

Maybe we together can figure out how this should be. At first I'm thinking something simple that could maybe fetch from AROS archives and be configured by the distro maintainers for what will show up. Could also be expert mode where users take control over it at their own risk ;)
Does not have to come with uninstall etc. At first could just be download and you select yourself where you like to unpack etc.

If someone interested please pm me a price for the job.

I agree with you that the Distro must be as small as possible and contain only the essential and working applications.
Then you could make separate packages for yourself Applications, Developents, Demos, Games.
In this way it will be easier and faster to test the distro, many people in front of huge archives are scares or reluctant to try.

sabbate: Thx, I will check it out but don't think it is exactly what I was thinking.

The good thing about a kind of packet manager would also be less confusion about abi v.0 or v.1.
I know Paolo already confirmed that there will be no Icaros abi v.1 i386 and only possible with AROS 64-bit.
I still think that with our limited hardware support and possible problems porting software to 64-bit there is a need for AROS abi v.1 i386 (32-bit)
Time is simply not our best friend and things must happen before there are no interest in next generation Amiga or Amiga like systems.

I'm thinking about abandon abi v.0 for AspireOS and do this distribution abi v.1 only.

aros 64 with smp support requires a lot of work I think now you are working on i386 abiv1 for a long time and by the end of the year maybe we will have the new stable branch abandoning permanently abiv0

sabbate: abi v.0 been abandoned by the devs long time ago. I'm not talking about 64 bit smp but normal 64-bit version.
As you know abi v.0 programs does not work on abi v.1 even if both are 32-bit and many programs there are no source code or even developers interested, or even around to do abi v.1 version. This is first and foremost the reason why Paolo does not want to do abi v.1 before there are at least a 64-bit version where lot's been ported to that platform.

Well, Aminet lists Grunch as i386 AROS. I don't know what is needed to actually use it for AROS, but someone felt there would be no large problems. Then it would be machine-dependent parts that need changing for other versions. It may be as simple as recompiling and separate package lists, but I don't know. It seems worth looking into.

What is the part you think you don't want?

@Mysha

"Well, Aminet lists Grunch as i386 AROS."

I don't think so. Unfortunately it is only for MOS and AmigaOS.

<http://aros.aminet.net/search?query=Grunch>

But it looks like it's a problem with the interface, claiming to show only a specific flavour of software, yet showing others.

What happened with Jack, BTW?
