Well, my friends. Ah you can read here and here, VmwAROS has changed name into "Icaros Desktop". Not an easy decision but, as Colani already commented, it's the right one: I was just sick of people still thinking VmwAROS simply as "AROS for VMware", and I can't spend my life in forums to tell it's only part of the truth.

Well. Now is time to decide what to do in the future. Here are some spare thoughts about latest VmwAROS achievements, and things that could be done.

1. VmwAROS Live! and QEMU

I liked the double face of VmwAROS live, and the way it could run both virtualized in a Windows task and as a native installation. But since Icaros Desktop is another product, I don't know if it is good or bad to have this feature.

The good:
- allow many people to run it in a safe environment
- allow people with unsupported hardware to test the distro anyway

The bad:
- might discourage people to burn it and try it natively
- QEMU is slow, painfully, dramatically slow
- netowrk and sound not supported (need user to install TAP driver on windows)
- increases a bit file size
- totally pointless for linux and macos users (they are about 8% of the market, however)
- still need installation under the virtual machine

2. Icaros Desktop VE

In the past I got many downloads of VmwAROS VE (the one for VMware), but since installation on VMware is easy, I don't see the point in keeping this version alive. The truth about VMware is that on newer versions we have to carefully create a customized, tailored virtual machine for AROS, and eliminating the VE version would introduce some problems. What do you think? Should I keep or kill the VE version?

Hmm the VE version is quite popular as you say but if you could use that time to improve the live version i think its better, if people are really interested they will find ways of running the live version... have you tested it with Virtual Box?.

My opinion is that a preconfigured, ready-to-use virtual environment should still be available. Having to choose between Vmware, Virtual Box and qemu I would choose Vmware, because current users of VmwAROS VE already have it and know how to configure it.

As for continue having qemu bundled with Icaros Desktop I would advocate against it. The lack of network support and slowness are my arguments. We can of course write that 'AROS is much faster on real hardware' but:
a) first impression counts
b) 'who read the manuals anyway'

Firstly, I was not sure about the name, but I do like it now. It has a nice feel to it and I believe will be a good flag waver with its meaning. A cool logo will finish it off.

I have to say, that there must soon come a time to concentrate on live version only. The virtual special distros days should be ending IMHO. It was important in the early days but now this OS should be proud to stand as a live system only that can be installed on real or virtual hardware. This would save effort and that effort put into live only.

Well done and I look forward to my Icaros desktop on my three Aros machines.

Steve

Hmm... ICAROS...

Could it be "Installable Comprehensive AROS"?

Firstly, thank you for changing the name, makes a huge amount of sense. One suggestion though, why Icaros Desktop and not just Icaros? Normally shorter names catch on quicker.

Anyways, thanks for your continued work on the leading AROS distro, just be careful not to fly too close to the sun. ;)

Just try registering www.icaros.com .org or .net and you'll spot why 'Icaros Desktop' =)

Other options were icaros-aros, icaros-distribution and the slang technicish icaros-distro. All them dind't fit my tastes.

Well, everyone of us is free to call it just 'Icaros' if they prefer. I don't think they will make confusion with something else in the AROS land...
