On the Icaros 2.0 ISO, the Storage folder presents two files with the same name, but with just diffent case: DataTypes.info and Datatypes.info.

The "Utilities/Cinnamon Writer/Directory" folder has also problems with its files and folders, which present strange names.

Those things creates problems, on Windows, with some software which manipulates/extracts ISOs. Tested with the ISO plugin for Total Commander, and with RUFUS (an application that let to create a bootable USB out from an ISO).

@cdimauro:
Good catch, the datatypes drawer is indeed (wrongly) duplicated).

afaik regarding cinnamon, you would have to convince author of cinnamon to make the changes. If you'd rename the dictionaries cinnamon will crash on startup (during initialization of dictionaries).

Con window shows:
Terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out of range'

what():  basic string::erase
Program aborted
.

Currently I prefer to spend some time trying to fix the ISO and restart with RUFUS. And yes, I plan to rename the dictionaries, even if it makes Cinnamon not working, because my primary goal is to enjoy Icaros 2 on my flaming new USB Pen which I bought for it.

Anyway, I'll try to contact the author when after that. ;)

Thanks for the hint. :)

Hi cdimauro,
You'd best checkout chapter 2 of the icaros desktop manual and follow that doing an installation onto a pendrive. Make note, i am not addressing chapter 2.2 which describes making a pen-drive installer (which is something completely different).

Just boot AROS from CD/DVD/Virtual machine, insert a pen-drive and run the installer script and make sure to select to install to USB device.

If nothing changed then RUFUS or whatever inferior solution isn't going to help you in any way (unless you add AROS support yourself).

And yes, it would be nice to be able to boot AROS straight from a vhd or loopback-device, but since many people asked before and nothings changed, i don't think it is going to happen soon. I would love to place AROS besides my other frugal installs or add vhd to a win bootloader

PS: doing an install that way will destroy existing data on pen-drive.

I know how to install Icaros, but currently I'm experimenting with tools like RUFUS, because I want to see if it's possible to convert the live DVD to a live USB, which is much more useful for PCs without DVD players, like all mine.

I wonder if you are aware of all possibilities ;-p

I also haven't got a dvd/cd player (for ages now).

1) run a vm like virtualbox/vmware and use that to 'boot' your iso. I believe the rest is obvious. (even possible on a 1.6 Ghz single core atom without virtualization support, if you don't mind the slowness).

2) use accompanied qemu that paolone so friendly provided (DVD only), and that offers you the possibility to install to usb as well (requires a bit of qemu knowledge).

3) alternatively use windows or linux hosted aros. i haven't been able to directly install icaros yet but you can manually format the pendrive and copy the files.

Don't get me wrong here, if you want to toy around with RUFUS and co. then all i can do is wish you fun (and good luck) while doing so. I just wanted to warn that it isn't going to work.... unless you got some goodies for us as X-mas present

Yes, it's the second that you said: I'm like to play with RUFUS now. :) Then I'll install AROS the usual way, with VWPlayer or VirtualBox (I already used QEMU to quickly see if Icaros works).

I saw some interesting things, like that the ISO has no C, L, S, ecc. folders, but the partially created USB Pen has them. So, it seems that RUFUS is doing something to create a good AROS environment. However booting it is a matter of hope. :P

Then all i can do is wish you the best of luck.

Would you mind, to post your results (whatever the outcome) once you're done ?

It would be helpful to have it as definitive answer for those who would like to follow the same footsteps.

My efforts failed miserably (stuck on booting).

Update: manually patching the ISO I was able to remove the warning for the duplicated "DataTypes.info", but unfortunately it didn't work for the Cinnamon Writer dictionaries. I tried both the full Icaros ISO and the Light one: no way to go.

The partially created USB doesn't boot, for course. From the BIOS boot selector I can see the USB UEFI entry, but once I select it I can see a screen which very quickly disappears (so, I wasn't able to see it), and then Windows 8 starts to boot.

I've filed a bug report to the Rufus developer asking him to put an option to let the USB image creation continue, even if some error is found. So I've to wait for an answer or, hopefully, a new release with this little fix.

Question: is there any possibility to creare a new Icaros ISO which fixes the above problems? Even removing entirely Cinnamon Writer, which is THE problem actually. A light version is enough, just to continue experimenting with Rufus.
