AROS-Exec : Massive Spam Attack
Posted by 4pLaY on 2011/4/7 14:00:00 (4498 reads)

Because of massive registering of bot/spam accounts (ive deleted over 60 accounts today alone) i see no other way out of it then blocking the registration of accounts using these email providers for the unforseen future:

yahoo.co.uk
yahoo.com
ymail.com
hotmail.com
gmail.com
googlemail.com
mail.com

More might be added if i see the need, sorry about that, but its really out of my hands and rather in the hand of these email providers making it to easy to register email accounts.

 Re: Massive Spam Attack
Sorry to hear that 4pLaY, that's a real shame, though I can understand why you've taken the action you have.

Is there any way to workaround this issue for those that have accounts with the webmail providers you list? For example, if someone sent you a personal e-mail could you add their address to an exception list?

 Re: Massive Spam Attack
Excellent.

In that case, here's what I recommend. First, set up a free GMail account, something like aeenquiries AT gmail DOT com. Next set an auto-forwarding rule that sends copies of all mail sent to this address to your normal e-mail address. Lastly, post the new address here so that any users who can't sign up will be notified to e-mail this address to allow their AE account to be created.

The advantage of doing the above is that you don't have to give out your mail e-mail address (which could be compromised by spammers), and if the 'aeenquiries' address is compromised, all you need to do is switch off the auto-forward and create a new GMail account in its place.

Sound like a plan?

I wonder why Rocketmail is not listed. It is an alternative to the Yahoo mail and YMail domains on Yahoo's email site.

 Re: Massive Spam Attack
I have the same thing with my Xoops site but never had as much as 60 in one day so I just manually delete them and never bothered finding a fix but I bet Xoops will have a fix for it.

Usually the spam accounts will post on gallery comments or just leave links in their profile, I guess a way of generating backlinks. would be a shame to ban those providers as they are very common and might deter people from registering here.

 Re: Spam account registration Attack
I was shocked to see Gmail listed, which allows and indicates 2-factor authentication.
Aren't you already using a captcha, if not a more complex authentication method (e.g. requiring the user to add something (e.g. paste twice, go once) to the end of the validation URL?

Is it fair to mention here that for the people who haven't been worshipping (committing code, assets, etc. to) AROS and Icaros since 1992, things are a bit confusing? That is, I don't see (and don't know for what (and in which available script/mono-C#.net) I would code) a subjects tree, or search tag cloud, lexicon (MUI, OWB, Zune (=/= (Microsoft Zune | Microsoft Zune 2), developer terms etc.) etc. I want to know about the times and better performances of Icaros without causing excess pageloads (at least, not ones without really interesting...collateral articles and media, since there aren't ads!) Where and what would I submit towards those ends, for laughs and constructive derision (use, etc.) of administrators et al?

I'm hoping to get a steady laugh, one day.

 Re: Massive Spam Attack
There might perhaps have been some additional problems with this, I checked my profile and tried to update it... but it seems i got an [ ERROR: Invalid email ], first I did not understand why, because it was already set, then I started to add things up and figured that this problem might be connected to your action? If so, do you see any solution?
